Cemetery Guide

Cemetery Compliance Guide

Cemetery Regulations

Personalized bench headstones installed at New Jersey cemeteries require permit applications that include a scaled design drawing with all dimensions and material specifications. Cemetery boards throughout NJ typically enforce height limits of 36 to 42 inches from grade and seat thickness minimums of three inches. Personalized Bench Shop prepares all permit submissions and coordinates with cemetery offices directly. Our artisans design each personalized bench to comply with the specific regulations of the receiving cemetery before a single chisel stroke is made.

Foundation Requirements

A personalized granite memorial bench weighs between 300 and 800 pounds. New Jersey's freeze-thaw climate requires a concrete foundation reaching at least 36 inches below grade in northern counties to prevent seasonal heaving. Personalized Bench Shop's installation crew pours or inspects foundations at every placement site, ensuring the personalized bench the family has commissioned will remain exactly as placed for generations.

Religious Cemetery Considerations

Personalization often extends into religious and cultural identity. Personalized Bench Shop artisans carve Catholic crosses, Jewish Stars of David, Eastern Orthodox cross forms, and denominational symbols with equal precision. Russian and Polish families frequently commission Cyrillic inscriptions or traditional Eastern European folk motifs alongside English lettering. Our workshop has been serving these communities from Morris County for generations, and we understand the memorial traditions they bring with them.

Custom/Personalized Bench

A personalized memorial bench is defined by what makes it specific to one person or one family. The bench structure itself — granite seat on pedestal or two-leg supports, 48 to 72 inches wide, 300 to 800 pounds — is the physical foundation. What makes it a personalized memorial bench is everything our artisans carve into that stone. Custom inscriptions can include a full name, a nickname, a given name in its original language alongside an anglicized form, dates of birth and death, and any text the family chooses — a verse from a song, a line of prayer, a phrase that the person said throughout their life. Portrait imagery, hand-tooled from a family photograph, is a frequent addition for families who want the bench to carry a likeness as well as a name. Religious symbols, military emblems, botanical motifs, and custom ornamental borders are all within our artisans' established chisel vocabulary. The granite memorial bench craftsmanship at Personalized Bench Shop is built for permanence. Every inscription is cut at the depth our artisans have found, through 80+ years in Morris County, NJ, to hold its legibility and character through New Jersey winters and summers for generations. American-made granite, cemetery and garden installation included.

Granite Options

Personalized benches benefit from a granite color that suits the individual being honored. Jet Black is the most popular choice for portrait imagery — its deep, uniform polish makes likeness etchings read with exceptional clarity. Blue Pearl and medium gray are chosen for their quieter presence. Balmoral Red suits garden memorial installations where warmth in the stone is an intentional choice. All Personalized Bench Shop personalized benches use American-made granite, polished on inscription faces and finished in sawn or thermal texture on structural surfaces.

Custom Design Process

Personalization starts with what the family brings to the consultation — photographs, written inscriptions, sketches, reference images. Our artisans ask questions and listen before drawing anything. A scaled design drawing is then produced for the family's review and approval. This drawing shows every element of the bench: dimensions, inscription text and layout, imagery placement. Nothing goes to chisel until the family has signed off. Changes at the drawing stage cost nothing; changes after carving are not always possible. We invest heavily in getting the drawing right.

Our Process

Our Hand-Carving Process

Every personalized memorial bench in our Morris County workshop moves through six stages. Design intake: our artisans meet with the family, collect all reference material — photographs, inscriptions, symbols — and confirm the installation cemetery's requirements. Scaled drawing: the full bench design is drawn and submitted to the family for review. Revisions are made until the drawing matches the family's vision. Material preparation: American-made granite is cut, surfaced, and polished in our Morris County workshop. Hand-carving: every inscription element is cut by hand with pneumatic chisels. Portrait imagery is worked in stages. Ornamental borders are cut after the primary inscription so proportions can be calibrated to the final text. Finishing and inspection: the bench is cleaned and reviewed against the approved drawing before delivery clearance. Delivery and placement: our crew installs the bench at the cemetery or garden site, prepares or confirms the foundation, and levels the piece. The family is notified when their personalized memorial bench is in place.

What Families Say

New Jersey families have entrusted us with their memorials for three generations.

“My mother spoke three languages and the bench carries her name in all of them. Personalized Bench Shop's artisans carved Cyrillic and English with equal care, and they worked with our family photograph to produce a portrait relief that still takes my breath away. It is in a Passaic County cemetery and it is exactly her.” — Nataliya, Passaic County NJ
